Hannah & Hammy
Hannah & Hammy are two of our most recognizable residents.
Hannah was found by our volunteer staggering down the back roads of Gasden County. She was a walking skeleton, her head had a huge gash in it, and it appeared that she had just given birth although no puppies were ever found. We immediately had her checked out, and were told she was approximately 9 months to a year, had indeed given birth, and had a concussion from being struck with something over the head. In past years we have had a no pit bull policy at Lemondrop, only because when we attempted to help some in the past, they always ended up attacking the farm animals. But Hannah melted our hearts, and she was extremely docile. We decided to keep her until she found her forever home. This was two weeks before Christmas 2016.
The day after Christmas we got a Phone call from a woman who had found a piglet running around in the grass on Hartsfield road, she had been referred to us by the Gentle Barn in Tennessee as the local Farm Sanctuary. She bottle fed the piglet until the next day when we picked him up.
When we returned to the Sanctuary with the piglet, Hannah immediately took possession of the piglet, we were shocked and amazed when she began to nurse him like a puppy. It was one of the most tender heart warming sights you can imagine, this mommy who had lost her babies nursing an orphaned piglet. She cuddled, washed, protected and nursed him until he was four months old and we moved him into our pig area.
After almost 4 years of living happily with us at the Sanctuary, Hannah passed away suddenly in 2020. We believe she may have had an aneurysm or brain damage from the abuse and head trauma she suffered before coming to us. It was very difficult for us to lose Hannah. All of our animals and volunteers loved her. She is and will always be missed.
Hammy continues to live happily at the Sanctuary. Although we have tried to find him a good foster home several times (after the severe damage we sustained during Hurricane Michael), no one seems to want him. But we do. in 2021 we extended his pen and began repairing the storm damage. He and his pen mate Hansel, received a new sturdy shelter to protect them from the sun, rain, and storms. They are very happy.
