Happy & Munchie

These two lovelies came to Lemondrop in 2016 from a young woman from FSU who had developed allergies to feathers and was unable to keep them. Munchie the male cockatiel is about 4 years old and Happy the female dove is about 7 years old. They were previously kept in separate cages, and were very lonely. After some talk, we decided to try and put them together. It was an instant take, and soon, Munchie and Happy were very much in love.

They cuddle together at night, groom each other, and about every four months they try to build a nest together. Happy will lay 1-3 eggs, and they take turns sitting on them, hoping that they will hath. Sadly doves and cockatiel's can't have fertile eggs together. But the dream is there, and they care for their little eggs with such tender loving care.

On March 30th 2019 we found a baby chicken who had lost its mother. Since she was so small, we brought her in (thinking it would be temporary) and put her in the cage with Happy and Munchie. Instantly Happy decided that the chicken must have hatched from her eggs, and adopted her as 'her baby'. Not wanting to break her heart, we allowed her to raise the chick (who one of our supporters named Dove). Even now, as a fully grown chicken, she puts her head down so she feels small and sits next to Happy on a branch. We had to eventually move her to her own large cage because she outgrew the one for the exotic birds. But from her new cage, she can see her mommy and gets to visit her nearly every day.
