Its almost February!?
This year is flying by so fast! It's hard to believe that it is almost February already. We have been busy cleaning up after the storm (still), and there's still a ton of work. It's been hard trying to juggle keeping up with the animals and delivering food plus all the clean up, but some how - we are doing it.
For those of you who haven't been following our most current activity on Facebook, here's a little recap of the last month's events;
On New Year's Eve we delivered approximately 1,500lbs of food to hungry people, families in need and homeless. We were so touched by this amazing thank you letter that we received a few days later from the Kearny Center, thanking us for all of the food that we delivered over the holidays. 😊🙏🏼
After delivering food to the hungry families and communities that we know personally, all of the excess was delivered to the Kearny Center. We are so grateful that they were able to use it for their amazing programs!
Here's a few of the stories you missed that were posted on our Facebook this last couple weeks;
Meet Gloria!
This lovely lady is the oldest chicken resident at Lemondrop.
She is somewhere around 7 years old right now, and still running around and loving life! Gloria has been with us since she was about 6 months old, a young hen. She has always been one of our sweetest ladies and loved by all of our volunteers. Her favorite treat is cilantro, which she happily will eat right from your hand. We are hoping for many more long years with this special lady.
Happy the dove and Munchie the cockatiel have been with us for three years now! It’s hard to believe they have been with us for so long... when they first arrived they had been kept in separate cages and were fairly quiet and subdued. We merged them together into one cage, and the two instantly bonded. Munchie is extremely protective of his lady, and Happy regularly nests and sits on eggs (shh... she doesn’t know they aren’t fertile and won’t hatch).
Today the two love birds moved into a double size larger cage with room to fly around and a flat bottom with hemp bedding. Happy loves to use the bedding to nest and is always “redecorating”. Right now Munchie is happily singing and crawling around the new cage while happy is exploring the bottom. 😊 Success! I think they like it.
This is Winston, he is one of our adoption success stories!
Last year we found him in a parking lot, he ran right between our tires and somehow managed not to get hit. We picked him up, he was covered with fleas, dirt, was underweight and had no microchip or ID tag. Our best guess is that he is a papillon.
After several weeks of working with him to get him back up to weight, taking time to potty train him and get him comfortable with other animals, we placed him for adoption. An awesome young man by the name of a Tyler happened by our adoption table and posted a picture of Winston on his Facebook page. Later that day we got a phone call from a wonderful family in south Florida who had just lost their little fur baby also a papillon, to old age.
The next day Lindsey flew up to meet him. It was an instant success. He absolutely fell in love with her at first sight. The adoption was completed and he flew home with her that afternoon.
In the last year, he has grown so much! They have taken amazing care of him, he is clearly loved and so happy. ❤️ it’s one of the most rewarding stories that we can share, a baby finding his soulmate family. We are so thankful to have been part of the union.
With the temperatures dipping down again, our larger babies are eating more hay (this is normal in cold weather). Our hopes for the pasture being grown up by February seem unlikely now, and our hay stash is getting low.
If anyone would be willing to donate bales or rolls of hay, or bags of loose hay, we would be so grateful!
Remember to follow Lemondrop on Facebook for all the fastest updates the work we do, and adorable animal pictures (of course!).
A huge amazing heartfelt thank you to our dedicated supporters who have so generously helped us this month! Thanks to you we are able to begin the recovery post-hurricane and still be able to pay for our monthly operating expenses.
Panhandle Ponies, Shirley, Heather, Freddie at Walmart, Donald, Suzanne, Mr Gomez, Robert and of course Jaime.
Thank you for your love and support.
A special thank you to David and Jai who are always so dedicated in volunteering, helping us with the animals and feeding hungry people.
